The World Bank’s project “Piauí: Pillars of Growth and Social Inclusion” (project no. P129342) supports a land titling program in an area that is witnessing high levels of land grabbing, land conflicts and environmental destruction, which are linked to the expansion of monocultures into the region known as MATOPIBA, and the Brazilian Cerrado more generally.
The Land Research Action Network (LRAN) proudly announces our new book, “Agroecology: Science and Politics,” by LRAN co-coordinator Peter Rosset, together with eminent agroecologist Miguel Altieri.
Agroecology as a transformative movement has gained momentum in many countries worldwide. In several cases, the implementation of agroecological practices has grown beyond isolated, local experiences to be employed by ever-greater numbers of families and communities over ever-larger territories and to engage more people in the processing, distribution, and consumption of agroecologically produced food.
Social movements are using education to generate critical consciousness regarding the social and environmental unsustainability of the current food system, and advocate for agroecological production. In this article, we explore results from a cross-case analysis of six social movements that are using education as a strategy to advance food sovereignty.

The development model promoted by the region’s governments prioritizes trade and investment liberalization, and privatization. Private investment is sought in virtually every sector of the economy from energy, oil, minerals, agriculture and food processing to education, health, tourism, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, transportation and urban infrastructure.
